Meet the BRIDJE Fellows
Surge Africa partners with Universtiy of Birnmingham to deliver a fellowship on evidence based reporting in Nigeria.
The fellowship is a partnership between the Climate Reporting Gap Initiative (CRGI), the University of Birmingham, Surge Africa.
At a time when the climate crisis demands faster and more inclusive energy transitions, BRIDJE seeks to address the gap between global energy research and the local contexts where energy decisions have the greatest impact.
The fellowship is a 10-month international collaboration designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge energy research and locally grounded journalism. It brings together Nigeria-based journalists from CRGI with early-career energy researchers from the University of Birmingham, supported by senior research advisors.
Through the programme, each journalist will work with a researcher to explore research findings and their relevance to Nigeria’s evolving energy landscape and the wider African energy transition. The collaboration is designed to help translate complex energy research into accessible and contextually relevant stories for Nigerian and broader African audiences.
Over the course of the fellowship, journalists and researchers will work together through structured online sessions, collaborative development of story ideas, and editorial and scientific review. The fellowship will also support the development of research-informed multimedia articles and a research communication protocol to guide future collaborations between journalists and researchers.
For journalists, the fellowship provides access to specialised expertise in energy systems, climate transitions and sustainability, while strengthening their capacity to produce rigorous, evidence-based reporting. For researchers, the programme provides an opportunity to develop public communication skills and work directly with professional journalists to make complex research more accessible to non-technical audiences.
